There are various types of photography that a photo enthusiast can choose to get into. Some types are even divided into sub-categories for a more specialized form. Being flexible on many types of photography can be an advantage but it is also great if you can choose something that you can master in.
Among the most popular forms of photography are wedding photography, newborn photography, landscape and of course portrait photography. If you find it interesting to see faces, expressions and emotions of people, then portrait photography is a good choice. Portrait photography generally reflects the emotion, expression or personality of the subject which be an individual or group of persons.
Like other types of photography, there are certain brands, models and types of photography equipment that are best used for taking portrait pictures. It is important for a portrait photographer to know what cameras and lenses to buy and use. Most professional photographers will agree that a camera body doesn’t have to be too expensive. It is better to invest more in the lenses that you will pair with the camera.
With portrait photography, there is no single perfect lens but there are lenses that are ideal for taking portrait shots.
Below is a list of lenses to guide you on which one is right for a specific purpose.
Wide angle lens
For environmental portraits wherein a part of the surroundings will be included in the photo, a wide angle lens is a good choice. For close up shots, it is not ideal since it can make some parts of the face like the nose look bigger.
Prime lens is a lens with a fixed focal length of 50mm-105mm. The most widely used in portrait photography are 50 and 85mm. An 85mm length can give you the ideal shallow DOF (depth of field) that you need for portrait shots. Same with 50mm, it is great for different portrait shots whether full body, upper only, head etc)
A prime lens also works well in low light situations because its shutter speed is fast thus capturing more light. Photographers of Eysian Studios find a prime lens efficient in capturing thir desired portrait pics.
Short telephoto lens
A short telephoto lens is sometimes referred to as portrait lens. This lens can be a prime (fixed) lens which is best in shooting normal/ standard portraits. The image is not distorted and it really shows focus on the subject.
Zoom lens (70-300mm)
A zoom lens is usually used in fashion portrait shots. With a zoom lens, the subject is separated from the background so the subject will really stand out. This brighton photographer likes using a zoom lens when taking candid portrait shots.
There is no single lens that can do every type of portrait shots you want. Different brands offer different features and give different image results. These lenses also vary in prices so if your budget is limited then you will have to carefully choose the affordable lenses that work well.
It is important to study, experiment and practice before you can finally decide which one is the best for your type of portrait.
