Are you one of those people who love to see action inside a court or a stadium? Do you also take pics of these awesome actions? Well, you are most likely interested in sports photography and aspire to become a professional sports photographer.
Sports photography may not be that popular today as it used to be in the past. But then, there are still sports photographers who continue to excel in this field and earn an income from taking pictures during games or sport events.
If you are interested to become a professional sports photographer, then here are some essential tips to help you achieve your goal.
Choose the right camera shooting mode
Always set your camera on to continuous or burst mode, whichever is available in your camera. Setting it to continuous mode can give you plenty of pictures in one click. Sports is an action-packed event wherein in just a split of a second, awesome moments happen so you need to move fast, grab your camera and take shots. Another helpful advice for amateur sports photographer is to always hold your camera and be prepared to shoot pictures.
Learn to use High ISO if needed
We all know that not all sports events are done in broad daylight, some are held in the evening where there is limited light. In this situation, it is sometimes difficult to take clear shots. One way to solve this is to raise the ISO of your camera to a higher level.
Increasing the camera’s ISO will allow photographers to let more light enter into the camera nd shoot on a faster shutter speed like in a range of 1/1000 of a second. You have to be careful though when increasing the ISO since doing so can possibly increase the noise and give you unclear images. Study your camera’s ISO to know what level is best to choose when shooting.
Shoot in RAW
A common advice by professional photographers to amateur photographers is to shoot in RAW. Shooting in RAW will allow you to produce the real, exact image as you capture it. No data gets removed thus making it easier for you to edit later according to your preference. Photographers of kent wedding photography find this option important.
Do something new
Although sports photography is all about action, it doesn’t mean all sports photos must be taken the same way. You can try to apply a different approach, shoot in different angles or positions. Use your creative thinking and find ways to make your photos look more brilliant.
Take shot of the surroundings
While it is important to take shots of the players in a game, you should also consider photographing the venue, the audience and other interesting subjects in the game venue.
Use a fast, long lens
A telephoto lens is preferred by sports photographers who are shooting football, basketball and similar sport where the venue is wide and it is difficult to get near. With the help of a telephoto lens, you can zoom in to get a better view of your subject and then take shots of it. Even surrey wedding photographer sometimes uses a telephoto lens when shooting a wedding ceremony.
Wear a photographer’s shirt or vest
In some sports events, security is very tight and aside from securing a permit, it is important that you wear a photographer’s vest or shirt so you can be easily identified. Security personnel and organizers will right away know you are there to cover the event and you can even try to request to position yourself in a better spot.
